Future Heritage Projects

We are currently developing a Stage 2 Heritage Programme for submission to Heritage Lottery. This programme will build upon the findings of the present project and address some of the issues raised concerning the management and conservation of the heritage assets. A series of consultations with local community groups and stakeholders were carried out during June/July 2009 to gauge the type of projects to be undertaken and ask just what exactly is seen as being the most important heritage aspect of the Lough. A survey was sent out to over 300 local community groups, stakeholders, NGO’s , relevant council officers, local MLA’s, NIEA, museums, and other statutory bodies in advance of a workshop event which was held in December 2009 at the Lough Neagh Discovery Centre. The survey sought clarity on issues raised at the earlier consultations and helped direct the proceedings of the workshop. The priority areas identified by the survey and workshop are summarised below:

a) Improved interpretation at main heritage sites
b) Lough Neagh heritage trail and signage
c) Assist small community projects e.g. small restoration projects, history books
d) Oral history recording for Fishermen and WWII veterans
e) Volunteer-led flagship archaeological excavations
f) School educational programme
g) Small museum development for local artefacts
h) Quality book on the heritage of the Lough
